"Poison ivy" is a skin allergy to the resin of poison ivy, oak, sumac and some other plants. The resin can be acquired directly from the plant or from clothes, smoke, or pets that have come in contact with the poison ivy. If you know you have come in contact with one of these plants take a soapy bath immediately and change clothing.
The rash of poison ivy usually does not appear until at least a day after the encounter, sometimes as long as 2 weeks afterwards. If the itching is mild, Benadryl Elixir by mouth or Caladryl lotion on the skin may be helpful. If the itching or rash becomes severe, make an appointment to see your doctor. Shots may be helpful in severe cases or when the allergy affects the face, but will be most effective if given within 24-48 hours after the onset of the rash.
Please call for an appointment if you suspect your child has poison ivy.
