Molluscom

Molluscum contagiosum is a common skin infection seen in children.  It looks like small flesh colored bumps.  The cause of this wart-like condition is a pox virus that enters small breaks in the skin surface.  For this reason, it is most often seen on patients with dry skin or eczema.  This virus thrives in warm humid environments and is easily passed from person to person on skin, towels and bedding.  It can also be spread to others areas on the same patient by scratching or when the growths touch uninfected skin.

This is a harmless condition so no medical treatment is necessary.  If left untreated, each molluscum growth will last about 90 days.  However, new ones generally grow as the older ones clear up.  Most patients will completely clear this condition within a couple of years even with no medical intervention but treatment can hasten recovery.

If the condition causes the child embarrassment or discomfort, talk to your pediatrician about treatment options.
