Insect Bites

When a sting occurs, wash the area with soap and apply 20% aluminum chlorhydrate (underarm antiperspirant) or apply a paste of baking soda. If the area itches, you may give your child an antihistamine such as Benadryl or Atarax (prescription required). Acetaminophen sometimes relieves mild itching.

If a skin rash or swelling occurs in areas other than that of the sting, or if vomiting, diarrhea, faintness, fever, muscle spasms or difficulty breathing develop, call 911 immediately. If the swelling or rash or other reactions are severe, go to the emergency room immediately.
