At age 2-8 months of age, most infants begin to drool a lot. They will put almost anything into their mouths. When their first teeth are ready to erupt (usually after 6 months of age), infants may lose their appetite, become restless and cranky, and sleep poorly. When this happens, a teething ring may help. Solid rubber or plastic ones seem to work best and work better if they are cold. Gently rubbing the gums with your fingers may also help. Oragel will often soothe the pain. Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen may be used.
Often the child will have a runny nose or may have loose bowel movements, pull at the ear, be cranky, and sleep poorly. However, if the symptoms are persistent, do not assume that the symptoms are due to teething. All children at this age go through the teething process. Many children at this age have frequent illnesses. It is often coincidental that the two are occurring at the same time. Therefore, the presence of teething should not prevent your seeking medical attention if your child is sick.
