

Earaches are usually the result of an ear infection in the middle or the external ear (ear canal). Middle ear infections are usually associated with symptoms of a cold. Ear canal infections usually follow swimming. Children who are suspected of having ear infections should he examined in the office.
Signs of a middle ear infection include pain in the ear, loss of hearing, dizziness, irritability and fever. Pulling at the ear is a common and very unreliable sign in infants.
Swimmer's ear usually occurs in the summer after frequent swimming. It is primarily due to the loss of wax as a protective coating for the ear. If the ear starts itching, put 1-2 drops of mineral oil in each ear. Swimmer's ear can he prevented by putting 4-6 drops of rubbing alcohol in each ear following swimming. Ear pain or an ear with discharge is a condition that should he seen at the office.
Never attempt to clean the inside of the ear canal (even with a Q-tip). The wax is there for a purpose and will usually come out by itself.
