Asthma occurs when the major breathing tubes of the lung become too narrow for air to pass through easily. This results in a wheezy noise that occurs each time a person breathes out as opposed to croup - which has a characteristic noise on breathing in. It also results in a persistent cough. Asthma may be caused or aggravated by several problems including allergies, emotional stress, exercise, or infection.
If you suspect your child is having his first asthmatic attack he/she must be seen in the office. If your child has had asthma before, you may have some medication for wheezing on hand (Albuterol or a steroid). Start these at the first sign of an asthmatic attack. Then call us and make an appointment as soon as possible.
Many children who have asthma are on “controller” medicines that help prevent asthma attacks. Be sure to give these medicines every day, whether your child is sick or not. Do not stop or change these medicines without talking with our office or your child’s doctor first.
Wheezing associated with fever may mean that pneumonia is also present. Make an appointment as soon as possible.
